A Reminder to Pay Attention

I’m thankful for poets. They help me slow down and pay attention. Christian poets in particular help me pay attention in a worshipful way that reorients my heart back toward God.
Take a moment with me around a few lines...
From Elizabeth Barret Browning: “Earth’s crammed with heaven and every common bush afire with God.”
Similarly, from Samuel Taylor Coleridge: “Earth, with her thousand voices, praises God.”
Browning is wondering maybe burning bushes aren’t only for Moses back in Exodus. Maybe the fire within our hearts, the Spirit of Jesus can lead us to worship around any ordinary patch of Earth.
While Coleridge is inviting us to listen to the voices and songs of creation that point our hearts Godward and to join in again.
You know, it might just be good for us today—headphones off, screen down—to invest moments of our everyday lives and pay attention to God and His every good gift. The Poet of all Creation might just point us toward something He has hand-crafted to refresh our souls.
