Many of us who follow Jesus go through a fairly intense “theology phase”—I’ll call it—where we just study and devour Scripture, books, sermons, podcasts and all of that. I’m not sure I’ve grown out of that phase, actually, but I do know it’s important to strike a healthy balance.
Learning and study is good, of course. God is the highest subject, as well.
But, He’s not a subject. He’s the Sovereign Creator and King of the Universe.
Scripture makes it clear that He doesn’t like merely being learned about and studied about. He wants to know us and be known by Him. That’s connection with us. That’s relationship with us. That’s walking and talking and serving together first-hand not just hearing about God from second-hand sources.
One time I was reading some theology, and the author says, “maybe the godliest thing you can do right now is close this book and rest.” I agreed.
Let’s pause often with God. Rest. Connect. Listen. Talk. Let’s not merely study Him. Let’s be loved by Him and love Him, too.
