Beliefs

Check out this incredible quote by a German theologian in the 17th century—a war-torn time:
“In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, charity.”
Don’t we desperately need that in the world today? Don’t we desperately need that among Christians today?
Far too many have been written off as no longer Christian over non-essential beliefs rather than encouraged in a gracious spirit of freedom, learning, growth. Far too many have counted themselves out of Christianity because of political agendas or traditions falsely enmeshed with the essential beliefs of Christian faith.
I’m calling a timeout. I suggest a pause around the historical confessions of Christianity like the Apostles Creed or Nicene Creed.
If you believe those confessions, guess what? You are a Christian. Those are the essentials we unify around.
As you reflect on those confessions, notice just how many things you don’t find there that too often divide us with far too little kindness.
I wonder how you and I could express unity, liberty, and charity—this peace, freedom, and generosity so needed among so many diverse people and perspectives today.
