Christians can often be skeptical of truth claims outside of Scripture. And, Christians can often be skeptical of Christians who don’t acknowledge other sources of truth. The classic example is that of Christian faith and rationality, Scripture and the scientific method.
Christian philosopher, Francis Schaeffer, said that “all truth is God’s truth.” If God exists and He has created everything, then there is no truth outside of Him. The good news is that means that there is no truth outside of God’s ability to bless us with.
Scripture itself is clear that God is revealing truth to us in all creation, in Scripture, and most significantly in Jesus. So, we as Christians do not have to cut ourselves off from insights outside of Scripture, we just need to carefully discern God’s truth.
And, there are many examples of faithful Christians at the top of their fields exploring truth for the good of others: JRR Tolkien in literature, Luci Shaw in poetry, Alvin Plantinga in philosophy, Jemar Tisby in issues of race, theology, church history, Francis Collins in medicine, Rosalind Picard in health technology innovation, Diane Langberg in mental health, Ard Louis in physics, Jon Lennox in mathematics, and we could go on!
“All truth is God’s truth,” and He is happy when love Him and love others through it.
